Preamble The puzzle records an encounter between two adversaries (unclued at 1ac and 1dn respectively). Three other unclued entries are jumbled thematic items, reflecting their mistreatment by one of the characters. In one clue, the wordplay uses a thematic reference. Nine other clues contain a single-letter misprint somewhere in the clue; the correct letters in clue order give a relevant title minus the definite article. After filling the grid solvers must replace a connected sequence of five letters with a seven-letter sequence (one cell containing three letters), to represent a deception perpetrated by one of the adversaries, ultimately revealed. The grid changes result in real words and a two-word phrase, all to be found in The Chambers Dictionary (2008), which is the primary reference. The compound at 2dn is in the OED.
