Number 4045
Date 01/08/2009
Grid 13×13 barred grid without symmetry.
Preamble In some clues the wordplay gives the answer with a misprinted letter and the same letter is misprinted differently in the grid. Misprints for crossing entries never occur in the same cell. If for each misprint the letters from the wordplay and the grid are added to the correct letter (with the alphabet treated as cyclic, so Y + B = A, etc), the results in clue order spell part of a quotation without its last word. Once the grid is filled, most of the misprints, which form a structure of five thematic items, must be moved en bloc to replace letters elsewhere, leaving empty cells at their original locations. Finally, six letters must be changed and one empty cell filled to show the last word of the quotation in an appropriate place. Ignoring empty cells, all final entries are real words or names. The Chambers Dictionary (2008) is the primary reference.
Solution Notes
(Hide Solution)
The quotation is "… I can't tell a lie. I did cut it with my (hatchet)", attributed to George Washington in the story about felling his father's cherry tree. The misprinted cells form a rough tree shape in which may be traced ground cherry, bird cherry, wild cherry, winter cherry and hagberry. The top part falls to the left, being chopped through the trunk by the hatchet.
